2024 National Conference - Scholarship Winner Experience

I am very grateful to have received a scholarship to attend the National Conference in May.  It was good to be there with other administrators who deal with the same kinds of issues that I deal with each day.  The social gatherings are, by design, intended for networking.  I was able to see old friends, make new ones and interact with business partners and vendors.  Dinner with the New Orleans chapter members was a highlight for me.

The educational sessions were beneficial.  Favorites for me were a highly technical session on non-equity partners in a partnership, a session on authentic leadership and a session on succession planning.  The succession planning presentation and discussion gave me some specific takeaways that I plan to implement.  The best example is a scoring sheet that should help to identify significant risk to the firm if a certain practice group or certain partners were no longer with the firm.

It was also good to be present as Geoffrey Williams, outgoing international president, passed the gavel to incoming president, Amanda Koplos.  Geoffrey was able to celebrate with family members, fellow Stone Pigman employees, the New Orleans chapter and all of ALA!

As mentioned before, these kinds of events are designed to maximize networking.  I was introduced to and was able to spend valuable time with a fellow ALA member who uses a similar software platform.  We were able to commiserate about our issues and do a bit of troubleshooting together.  This is what ALA is all about.  Making connections that help each of us do our jobs better!
