Session I: Leveraging Information Governance for Compliance and Risk Management in Law Firms

Presentation Summary: With increasing regulatory pressures and evolving client demands, law firms must implement an effective information governance (IG) framework to manage data, ensure compliance, and mitigate risk.  This session will explore how contemporary IG practices enable firms to remain compliant with outside counsel guidelines while improving information access to those with rights.  Using insights from Mattern’s 2024 Information Governance Survey, we will discuss common challenges, practical solutions, and industry best practices that law firms can adopt to stay ahead.

Key Takeaways:

  • Explore the Role of IG in Risk Management: Understand how an effective IG program helps manage cybersecurity and data retention risks.
  • Identify Key Components of an IG Framework: Learn practical approaches to develop policies addressing both physical and electronic records while complying with client guidelines.
  • Overcome Data Sprawl and Compliance Gaps: Gain insights on how law firms can streamline unstructured information and improve enforcement across electronic repositories.

Speaker: Nathan Curtis, IGP

Nathan Curtis, IGP, a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt, brings over 25 years of experience working with law firms in the U.S., Canada, and overseas in developing industry-first solutions across Information Governance, eDiscovery, Digital Imaging, and traditional Office Services.
